The Rise of the Vegan Vacation

Vegan vacation”, “vegan holiday”,and “vegan tours” are buzzwords that have exploded in the travel space. This travel trend has grown as quickly in the past few years as the rise of veganism.

It’s not too surprising that as more and more people adopt a vegan diet and lifestyle, they are also looking for vegan travel options.

But what does a vegan vacation look like? Traveling as a vegan is not only about finding the next meal. Veganism is often described as a lifestyle, which means avoiding animal products not only in food, but also in clothing, cleaning products, paints, cosmetics, etc. as much as possible, as well as using cruelty-free products.

For this reason, vegans are also keen to stay in all-vegan accommodation. A vegan hotel room, for example, does not have pillows or comforters made of down on the beds, and no leather sofas or other furnishings made of animal skin. There are cruelty-free toiletries in the bathroom, and any meals served on-site are of course 100 percent plant-based.

Vegan Welcome Vegan Welcome lists vegan-friendly hotels and bed and breakfasts in more that 60 countries around the world. It features a handy tool that lets travelers use criteria such as country, vacation type, food options, facilities, and price category to filter their search. And describing itself as the “Veg AirBnB”, VegVisits is a platform of vegan-friendly accommodation on offer in over 80 countries by local vegan hosts.

Maybe the biggest concern for vegans on the road is finding restaurants that cater to them. In this case, their best friend is the Happy Cow website Happy Cow, because it’s the most comprehensive and up-to-date list of vegan and vegetarian restaurants and stores in 180 countries across the world. This crowd-sourced online guide has been around for over twenty years now, and is a lifesaver for traveling vegans. There’s also a handy app version for smartphones.

With the rise in demand for vegan travel options, there has been an explosion of vegan tour operators and travel agents. Many vegans or “vegan-curious” travelers are happy to leave all the cruelty-free planning to these businesses with an eye on their requirements. But mainstream travel operators have also responded to this new market by offering custom trips catering to the needs of vegan travelers. In addition to stays in cruelty-free hotel rooms and meals at plant-based eateries, when it comes to travel itineraries, vegans steer clear of zoos, aquariums, and marine parks, as well as petting zoos, and elephant or other animal rides.

From cruelty-free travel tours to holistic cruises, and vegan food adventures to plant-centric culinary vacations, the list of travel companies offering travel experiences with a vegan focus is a very long one. If you’re looking for an all-vegan vacation, have a look at our list of travel operators below, many of which are vegan-owned and operated. Bon voyage and bon appetit!
