The permanent footprint of plastic. It’s like the pink elephant in the room, isn’t it? No one wants to talk about it, because no one thinks that it truly impacts their life. But it does. All of our lives. All of us on this great planet of ours unless we all do our part to make a difference. And that’s where Ahmed Hamida of Gabes Tunisia comes in to play. This amazing young man is just 27 years of age, and began his own personal movement by organizing his first group beach clean-up in 2021.
…raise recycling awareness…by bringing together business owners to encourage other business owners to recycle.
This movement included 30 volunteers all of whom dedicated their time to educate and raise awareness on the impact and importance of recycling within their community. After spending hours and energy the team collected so much that Ahmed realized the beach clean-ups would not be enough to protect the beaches from further pollution. Recyclables and trash collected ended up in the landfill because of the lack of recycling centers and bins. Because of this Ahmed and his group of eco-warriors are in the process of creating more recycling stations in Gabes and this is how they plan on doing it.
Ahmed will be raising money for this huge project; Stay Tuned. All of the monies raised will be used to buy a press machine for pressing the plastics, a shredder, solar panels, a washing line, a densification machine, and a used shipping container which will be used as a collecting center at the beach. They will then send the pressed plastic to the recycling center which will be in the city.
Their vision is to create recycling collection stations in each town, particularly the beaches. Recyclables will then be collected by locals and tourists in an effort to keep the beaches clean. He will also be creating incentives for the public to bring in their recyclables. For example, weekly beach yoga sessions will be given in thanks to all who helped to keep the beaches plastic free.
He has another plan as well: raise recycling awareness and the importance of environmental protection by bringing together business owners to encourage other business owners to recycle. He is also going to create an app to encourage more recycling among the public. This year, Ahmed will be going on a 1,500 km bike ride his country up to Italy to raise awareness of this global crisis that is life-threatening to us all in which he will document and post online. Won’t you make the same impact in your community? We need to rise up and band together and do our part where we live. It’s about honoring and cherishing this amazing place we call earth. It was given to us as a gift and it is our responsibility to take care of it.
